Emma Donoghue, author of Room • Thursday, September 23 • 7 p.m.
Emma Donoghue's Room is an unforgettable reading experience, and we
are thrilled to welcome her to Next Chapter Bookshop for this special
ticketed, catered event. The book, which has been long-listed for the
Man Booker Prize, and the number one pick on the September IndieNext
list, tells the story of five-year-old Jack and his Ma. Jack's
entire world is the room he shares with his mother. He was born there,
and has grown up there. It's where he learns, reads, eats, sleeps and
plays. At night, Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe where he is meant
to be asleep when Old Nick visits. It's home to Jack, but to Ma, it is
the prison where Old Nick has held her captive for seven years. Through
determination, ingenuity, and motherly love, Ma has created a life for
Jack, but she knows it's not enough. She devises a bold escape
plan--one that relies on her young son's bravery and a lot of luck.
What she doesn't realize is just how unprepared she is for the plan to
actually work.

NEW! Storytime is now on Mondays and Thursdays!
If you missed Storytime with Miss Joyce and Mooshie on Thursday mornings at 10:30, this summer you can catch up on Monday afternoons at 1:30 p.m.
Storytime for Thursday, August 26 (10:30 a.m.) & Monday, August 30 (1:30 p.m.)
Guess what Mooshie said when I asked him what he wanted for breakfast.
"Me-owtmeal" And "Me-owl?" That's what Mooshie said when we took a walk last night and heard a bird calling, "Hoot, Hoot." Has Mooshie turned into a cat? The answer came when I found him curled up on a pillow in the sun fast asleep, with the book, Kindergarten Cat by J. Patrick Lewis by his side. You won't be able to stop smiling, as we read the story of Tinker Toy, a cat who finds a home in a kindergarten classroom, and shows everyone that she's one smart cat!
After the story, you'll get to be the teachers in our very own kitty kindergarten class! For more fun, we'll need helpers for our felt board story and we'll be jumping up and down for a special back to school song. See you at storytime!
- Miss Joyce
Also on the program:
Pepper Goes to School by Linda Bleck (Little Simon)
The Little School Bus by Carol Roth (NorthSouth)
We All Go Traveling by Sheena Roberts (Barefoot Books)
